Falling Asleep

Tonight I cannot fall asleep
Laying by my wife-to-be;
This will be the memory
That I in older age will keep

The night’s time does stretch
For ever in for ever;
In the void, I remember
Grim Reapers cold stench

I feel his eyes are watching me
I hear his soft ratt’ling whistle
How it grinds upon my gristle;
O he can see, O he can see

I am going to die tomorrow.
I swear I probably will;
Don’t know why or how until
The moment comes for God to kill
And I’ll be a corpse and still,
I know I will see twice the morrow

I don’t pray or go to church,
Can’t say what the future is;
I thought I wouldn’t feel like this,
But when it’s night — the feelings perch.
