In management, there are no set principles, you have to be willing to adapt to new kinds of people, new situations, and most of all, new technology. Managers who want to stick to the olden days will be left in the dust! Technology is always changing, so you have to always be ready for it, and it’s possible if you just put your mind to it. And it’s crucial that you try, because whether you like it or not, disruptive technology will come, and even if the hype cools down, it’s still gonna be here to stay in some way. Here are some of my tips for using new technology to your managerial advantage.
- Keep your finger on the pulse of innovation. The last few years have proven just how quickly a whole industry can pivot, so you have to be ready to take disruption by the horns.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment! When new technology comes out, take it and see what you can achieve with it. This is the mindset that will set you up to be a pioneer in your industry.
- There is a time, not far displaced from us, yet feels more ancient than the tombs of Pharaohs. Many of us lived this time ourselves, only some appreciated what we had. On the horizon, behind thick fog, a great land rose up into view. We glimpsed Cyberia, and it seemed the winds would bring us to its shoreline soon. The most mysterious and isolating element of this time now is that brilliant optimism. What things we said and heard and saw… house music would bring all nations of jackals together… we surfed sine waves with molly while the eight’o’eights carried our feet to dawn… and in the buzz of the phone poles of the nation, someone has tried the twentysixhundred… fragments march over wire, air and ocean, an instant odyssey… behind the serial port, keys are mashed with smelly fingers, but one does not see this in cyberspace… ideas in purest form… the disembodiment cleanses… the proliferation of information shall bring the collapse of the Soviet Union, they can no longer hide the truth of their atrocities… the Library of Alexandria inside every home in America… What dreams there were. I’d give up everything to get back those foolish dreams.
- Encourage your team to share your experiences, highlighting where a new innovation really shines, and the times it wasn’t so useful. If you can share knowledge and iterate your processes, you can rapidly gain an efficiency head-start against your competitors.
