★★ Alice in Wonderland — Lewis Carroll

Alice in Wonderland is joyful and funny. It is perfect for reading to a child; the way it is written seems purposefully done for reading aloud actually. Carroll does not linger on things too much, things happen out of nowhere and this is normal in the story. Sometimes this pace causes confusion, in some parts where Alice moves to a different place there is a feeling of whiplash as I realize we’ve already ended up somewhere else altogether. This detachedness does enhance the sense of phantasmagoria through the whole work.

It’s difficult to make a detailed judgment of this work though. Does not comoe to make a statement, or work through themes, or express ideas, or any other lofty goal. All it does is entertain with silliness and humor, and it does so well.
